I had to have a hysterectomy last year and my hair broke off to where it is just below my ears. It wont grow?

I have tried vitamins and my hair still will not grow. I had average hair until the surgery, and now it has thinned a lot. I miss my pony tail and it has been a year now and still cannot get it into one. Any suggestions?
